Most sellers look at their selling price and think that’s their profit. It isn’t. By the time eBay takes its cut and shipping comes out of your pocket, the number you actually keep can be $20–30 less than what you expected on a $150 sale.

The formula

Net Profit = Selling Price − Item Cost − Shipping Cost − (Selling Price × Fee %) − Other Costs

Worked example

Take a $150 camera lens you bought for $90. Shipping runs $12. eBay’s fee on that sale (13.25%) comes to roughly $19.88. Do the subtraction and you’re left with $28.12 — about 18.7% margin.

ItemAmount
Selling price$150.00
Item cost−$90.00
Shipping cost−$12.00
eBay fee (13.25%)−$19.88
Net profit$28.12

Not bad, but almost $20 disappeared into fees alone, which surprises a lot of first-time sellers.

A few things worth knowing

eBay’s fee percentage isn’t the same across every category — electronics, for instance, sometimes have their own rate, so check the current fee chart for whatever you’re listing before you assume 13.25% applies. If you’re using a payment processor outside eBay’s own system, that’s a separate fee you’ll want to add in under “other costs,” since it’s not baked into this calculation.

If your actual payout ever looks a bit different from what this tool shows, promoted listing fees or international surcharges are usually why — treat this as a close estimate, not gospel. The biggest lever for improving margin on cheap items, by the way, isn’t raising your price — it’s combining smaller items into one listing so you’re only paying shipping once.
