Rates shown are static reference (mid-market) figures for planning purposes only and are not live. Banks and money-transfer services typically add their own margin on top — check a live source before making an actual transfer.
This converts an amount from one currency into another using the reference exchange rate between them.
The formula
Worked example
$500 USD at roughly 0.92 EUR comes out to €460 (500 × 0.92). But here’s the part people miss: that’s the mid-market rate — the “real” rate you’d see on financial news. Banks and money-transfer services almost always add their own margin on top, so what you’re actually offered at a counter or through an app will usually be a bit less favorable than what shows up here.
That gap is exactly why your bank’s rate never quite matches what you see in a quick search — they’re not lying, they’re just building in a fee. If you’re planning to exchange cash for a trip, comparing rates a few days ahead rather than grabbing cash at the airport tends to save real money, since airport kiosks are notorious for the worst margins.
A few things worth knowing
Rates themselves shift constantly — sometimes multiple times a minute during active trading — so treat any figure here as a close approximation for planning, not a locked-in number. For anything official, like business invoicing, use whatever rate source your accountant specifies, since exact timing can matter for record-keeping.
